The Canadian Centre for Fisheries Innovation can help when it comes to assessing the impact seals are having on stock recovery. That’s according to the Managing Director of CCFI and former provincial fisheries minister, Keith Hutchings. He says questions remain about the impact seal predation is having on northern cod stocks, and CCFI, which has been around since 1989,can play a role in helping to determine what factors are at play in the ecosystem that are hindering recovery. CCFI has the ability to bring together the expertise to do an in-depth analysis into what’s happening says Hutchings. “I think that’s the key,” he says, “instead of talking about one species…we need to look (at) the interrelated effects that are happening in the ecosystem.” Click here to listen
