Seaweed farming produces 27 million metric tonnes of biomass annually and is the largest marine aquaculture market by weight with a large majority (99.5 % of the farmed seaweed) of seaweed production from Asia. Global markets for seaweed are being driven by demands for marine food products, as well as for potential higher-valued extracts and carbon sequestering from global-warming impacts. Newfoundland has well established aquaculture, wild fishery and processing sectors that are linked to global markets (Chung et al., 2017). The province also has a diverse population of native seaweed species and the ideal environment for seaweed cultivation. Diversification strategies, such as for seaweed could take advantage of the demands for 'blue/green' oceanic culture in our clean, cold Atlantic waters.
